JIM WILSON

ARTIST BIO

Wilson was born in the back seat of a station wagon on the side of the road in the Philippines—an unconventional start that seems fitting for a life shaped by movement and creativity. His early years were spent on the move until his parents settled in my father’s hometown of McKinney, Texas, where his two sisters and he grew up.

After high school, Wilson left McKinney and swore he’d never return, setting o' on a journey that took me him Austin, Los Angeles, Virginia, Boston, and New York. Along the way, he studied architecture, built a career, and cultivated his artistic voice. But as life has a way of circling back, he now finds himself once again in Texas, creating bold, dynamic artwork infused with the colors, energy, and stories of his life.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I consider my work an adventure - a journey into the unknown. Rarely do I begin with a clear image in mind; instead, I let my process drive the work, layering it with the thoughts, memories, and questions that captivate me. The outcome always surprises me.

Fascinated by the beauty and mystery of the world, I explore the simple complexity of life through texture, color, and form. My work is built - layered with meaning, both physically and conceptually. I cut and glue discarded materials - old books, journals, maps, dress patterns, found lumber, nails, and other remnants of the past - embedding fragments of history into my compositions. I paint. I draw. I scrape and sand. I layer and build, allowing images and objects to emerge over time. My work carries traces of hazy memories, tangible moments of the present, and glimpses into an indescribable future.

My background as an architect informs both my process and my format. I am drawn to structure - often working within squares or cubes, attracted to their clarity and stability. But structure is only the beginning. I create artificial rules within a piece only to break them with delight. My work is physical, demanding, and full of tension - between chaos and order, beauty and rawness, precision and unpredictability.

I am compelled by the notion that, as intricate and layered as this life is, we see only a fraction of what truly exists. Through my work, I explore that unseen space - the places just beyond our grasp, waiting to be discovered.
